Objective: To demonstrate the technical and economic effectiveness of a range of water conservation measures for urban supermarkets with the intended desire that the information obtained will provide credible economic benefits thus increasing their implementation and use throughout the state. A more detailed Study Overview is available. Methods: Six supermarkets were investigated to obtain accurate baseline water and energy use information. After the baseline data was established, three water conservation technologies were investigated. Evaporative coolers are a primary study focus due to their known high water use - upwards of 60% of total in-store use! Following the conservation modifications, performance was closely monitored to determine what changes may have occurred. Simultaneously, water and energy use data was collected and a final cost benefit analysis performed. The study will take eighteen months with completion expected in 3rd Quarter, 2003.
